I have to admit, it was fun. I was laughing and really enjoying it, but it really was inspiring to me. There are many great people out there and we bonded instantly.
Bruce is doing exceptionally well. He has been released from physical therapy, he is driving again and he is back to the routine of reading the paper at his favorite coffee shops. He told someone today that he feels like he is ninety-five percent back to normal. He is gaining strength and stamina every day. He has gained back half of the weight he lost. His hand doesn’t shake like it did, and he is finally sleeping through the night. His shoulder, however will take some exercise to build back the muscles. Doug and I have returned home many times from trips outside the USA, but yesterday's arrival back in the country was more memorable for us than any other.

We had ridden our motorcycles 10,000 miles to get here. As we entered each country on this journey, we put that country's flag on our windshields -- always thinking how sweet it would be to put the Star Spangled Banner on as the final one. Here you can see Doug affixing his, and me putting mine on.

The day started early for us in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and ended 966 miles and 18 hours later in Ft. Worth, Texas, where the Extreme Team had arranged to meet us. All of us will ride together today for the first time in a year, covering the final "offiicial" leg of the trip -- ending at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma.

At the start of the day my odometer read exactly 31,500 miles. At day's end it was 32,466. After the long ride the part of my anatomy that ached the most was, of course . . . my knees. Go figure.

There's no other way to fix a flat but to just dig in and remove the wheel, then take the tire off the wheel, remove the tube from the tire, patch the tube (with repair supplies that Doug brought in the first place), and then reverse order to reinstall.

Yes, it takes awhile.

Then you dig a hole under the front wheel to create enough space to remove it.

We're getting pretty good at it after four tries.

And while I did my best to help as much as possible, it was Doug who really carried the load each time.

Doug can fix anything! And I've come to realize that Doug is happiest when he's fixing things - even in miserable conditions.
Treatment is to allow the body to dissolve and absorb the fat from marrow that sometimes accompanies "long bone fractures" such as the one Bruce suffered. For that healing to occur, the patient must be kept stable, with blood fully oxygenated, etc. It can take up to a week or even more.

Well, I have adopted Emerson’s slogan and can honestly say that tape indeed works.

For this trip our tape of choice is duct tape and we've repaired almost two dozen items: tail light lens, turn signal lens, windshield, gas cans, shifter foot rest, front running lights, helmet, saddle bags, iPod holder, wheel weights, cargo box, etc.

Maybe the best of all was suspenders to hold up Doug's rain pants...made entirely of duct tape. (Black of course to match!)

NO ROOM FOR SOUVENIRS

One of the bad (maybe good) things about riding a motorcycle is that there's no room for accumulating souvenirs. But when the sales people at a roadside stop look like this, how could I resist?

Besides, these little knitted finger-puppets, which are obviously made specifically for my grandchildren, take up very little room and weigh next to nothing.

And they even had one that I think my son-in-law Nate may enjoy. Is that really a Jayhawk? March Madness!

Well. today we noticed that Bruce looked like a high-ranking military officer standing beside the road because of something on his collar.

What looked like a medal turned out to be a moth. The winged creature had clearly taken a liking to Bruce.

At first, we didn't want to say anything, but we were noticing Bruce had an attraction to creatures of the crawling kind. And just maybe this is an outcome of his preference for open-faced helmets.

We soon validated our assumptions when Bruce discovered a beautiful live beetle, while we sat eating outside at a small roadside diner. Did we ever find out just how much he liked bugs! Much more than we do.

(...FOR THE RECORD ...BRUCE DOESN'T EAT BUGS, BUT HE DOES LIKES THEM, ALMOST AS MUCH AS WE LIKE HIM :-) NO INSECTS WERE HARMED, INTENTIONALLY DURING THE MAKING OF THIS BLOG)
Sometimes you just find yourself with an available dance floor and a willing surrogate partner. Such was the case when we stopped in Columbia to get a break from the rain and have lunch. The owner of the restaurant gave the thumbs up to his fiancee to dance with me. I was honored and she followed rather well.

I should stress that the people running the hotels have ALWAYS been gracious and helpful. They've offered us the best they have. And we've always been sincerely thankful and appreciative in return.
I know this for a fact, because a helmet saved my life about 10 years ago when my straight-on collision totaled not only the motorcycle I was riding but also the Toyota Corolla that I hit dead center.
The Corolla was coming around a blind curve from the other direction. I was spared serious injury despite head-first contact with the windshield and also - after flying high over the car - a head-first landing on the road below.

Or a helmet can be used for carrying things like maps, GPS devices, satellite trackers (orange in the photo), water bottles, gloves. Whatever!

It's true, a helmet can be a purse! Although, for a male rider I suppose it’s called a murse.

Another great use of a helmet is for singing - hypothetically, mind you. The acoustics inside a full helmet are akin to a concert hall or cathedral. And unlike, say, singing in the shower, there is absolutely no danger anyone else would ever hear.

And since nobody else could possibly hear, there wouldn't even be a requirement to know all the words. I could even have been singing when I took this photo of myself while riding. That is, IF a helmet were to be used that way. Hypothetically that is.

And the best use of a helmet could be for making a friend.
There is aspiration in their eyes. They are bright, interested and resourceful. They are here and I’m sure they will do fine.

I understand why so many ask about our country and express how they hope to visit one day.

Tulcan, Ecuador: A Taste Of China

It is always energizing to discover a pleasant place to stay after another stressful day on the road. We are holding up in Tulcan, Ecuador this evening....not too far from the Colombian border. We rode in beautiful weather today in the fantastic high altitude farm country above Quito.

Tulcan is about 10,000 ft elevation. It is a very unique place. Rather quaint with a touch of oriental influence. In fact, we are staying in the Palacio Imperial. The rooms and lobby are pretty nice compared to the town - let's just say it's a bit tired.

Although there's a lot of energy here now that we have arrived. I have become somewhat of a spectacle. The streets are crowded....and I was the only one, the ONLY one, with shorts on.

So, here we are having a Chinese dinner... in Northern Ecuador. Go figure.

Breakfast in Colta, Ecuador

Yesterday started early as we left our tiny 3-bedroom bungalow in Pallantanga, Ecuador.

We had stopped there the night before in the rain after getting some pizza at a roadside stand.

Leaving Pallatanga, we rode through sunshine and rain in the near-freezing cold, approaching 13,000 feet altitude in the Ecuadorean Andes.

Views were spectacular.

By the time we had arrived in the town of Colta, hunger had set in, and we could see bustling commerce around the bus station. We stopped for well over an hour, sampling the local breakfast and lunch delicacies and mingling with the friendly locals.

We were parked in spaces reserved for buses, and the local cop showed us his whistle to make sure we knew he had authority to move us along.

They also treated us to a delicious dinner. We thought we were the ones hosting them at dinner! We hope they'll visit us in the States so we can return some of their hospitality.

Days on the road don't get better than this.
